What happens during DBT?
DBT is designed to help participants learn and successfully implement a wide range of tools to help with how they manage their emotions and communicate with others. There are four main key areas that are addressed in DBT: mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotional regulation, and distress tolerance. Mindfulness skills are focused on staying in the present moment. Emotional regulation skills focus on how to recognize, label, and manage emotions. Interpersonal effectiveness skills are geared to improve communication skills and strengthen relationships. Distress tolerance skills are focused on tolerating a negative emotion instead of trying to escape from it or take an action that could make the situation worse.

A comprehensive DBT program consists of a weekly DBT skills group, weekly individual therapy sessions with a DBT therapist, telephone coaching with the individual therapist in between sessions, and an on-going consultation group for the DBT providers. The weekly group sessions typically last about two hours and clients learn skills from the four key areas above. In the weekly individual therapy sessions, the therapist helps the clients with applying the new skills they are learning into their daily life activities.
